What is God Like?

The Bible reveals a wealth of information about God. It helps us understand who He is, what He does, and how He loves us. Sometimes, we might wonder if God is like us or if He is entirely different. The truth is that God is both like us in some ways and very different from us in others. Let’s examine some ways we are like God and how He is far greater than us.
How God is like us.
GOD LOVES. One of the most important things about God is that He loves. The Bible says, “God is love” (1 John 4:8). Just like we love our family and friends, God loves us—even more than we can imagine! He cares about us deeply and wants the best for us.
GOD FEELS SADNESS. Have you ever felt sad? Jesus, who is God’s Son, also felt sadness. The Bible tells us that Jesus wept when His friend Lazarus died (John 11:35), which shows us that God understands our feelings. When we are sad, God knows what that feels like, and He is there to comfort us.
GOD CREATES. We enjoy creating things—whether it’s drawing a picture, building with blocks, or writing a story. God is the greatest Creator of all! The Bible says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Just like we enjoy making things, God made everything around us—the sky, the animals, the flowers, and even us, and imagine what fun he had doing it!
GOD SPEAKS and LISTENS. We talk to each other and listen when others speak. God does the same! God spoke to people like Moses, Abraham, and Samuel. He also listens when we pray. The Bible says, “The Lord is near to all who call on Him” (Psalm 145:18). God hears us when we talk to Him and He cares about what we say.
GOD WANTS RELATIONSHIPS. We all have relationships with our parents, friends, and teachers. God also wants to have a relationship with us. He created us to know Him and to have a close relationship with Him. The Bible tells us that God walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:8). Even today, God wants us to walk with Him by trusting and following Him.
He wants to talk and share things with us. “Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool” (Isaiah 1:18).
How God is different from us.
GOD NEVER SINS. Everyone makes mistakes, and we all do things that are wrong sometimes. But God never does anything bad. The Bible says, “God is light; in Him, there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). This means God is perfect and holy. He never lies, cheats, or does anything unfair. “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin” (Hebrews 4:15).
GOD KNOWS EVERYTHING. You and I learn new things daily but God knows everything—past, present, and future. The Bible says, “Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit” (Psalm 147:5). He knows what will happen tomorrow and even knows our thoughts before we speak them.
GOD CAN DO ANYTHING. Sometimes, we want to do things but can’t—like flying without an airplane or lifting something super heavy. But God can do anything! The Bible says, “With God, all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). He created the entire universe simply by speaking. Nothing is too hard for Him.
GOD LIVES FOREVER. You and I have a beginning and an end; we live and we die, but God is eternal, having neither a beginning nor an end. He is “the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End” (Revelation 22:13). He has always existed and will always exist. He will never grow old or cease to be God.
GOD IS EVERYWHERE. We can only be in one place at a time. If we are at home, we can’t also be at work at the same time. But God is not like that! The Bible says, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence?” (Psalm 139:7). God is everywhere, personally present, which means He is always with us, no matter where we go.
GOD IS PERFECT. Every day, we strive to do good, but we still make mistakes. God, however, is perfect. Everything He does is right, and He never fails. “As for God, His way is perfect” (Psalm 18:30). He is always wise, always fair, and always just.
Why this matters.
Knowing that God is like us in some ways helps us feel close to Him. He understands us because He loves, feels, and wants a relationship with us. But knowing that God is different from us also helps us trust Him. Since He never sins, knows everything, and has all power, we can be sure He will always do what is best for us.
When we pray, we can talk to a God who listens. When we are scared, we can trust a God who is strong. When we feel alone, we can remember that God is always with us.
So, even though we are not exactly like God, we are made in His image (Genesis 1:27), which means we share some of His qualities. And because He is greater than us, we can trust Him completely.
What conclusions can we draw?
God is like us in some ways—He loves, feels, creates, and speaks. But He is also very different—He never sins, knows everything, has all power, and lives forever. This is good news! We can draw close to God because He understands us, and we can trust Him because He is greater than we are.
The next time you wonder what God is like, remember that He is a loving friend and a mighty King. He is near to us, and He is more magnificent than anything we can imagine. And that is something truly remarkable!
